Chief of Staff

Deno makes programming easy. We make it possible to use JavaScript outside of the browser to build all types of software. Our free open source runtime is one of the most popular projects on Github. Our business is hosting JavaScript servers at the edge with the Deno Deploy serverless runtime. Try it out — you ought to be able to deploy a server world-wide in less than 5 minutes.

We are looking for an aspiring business leader to join the team as our first Chief of Staff. In this high-visibility role, you will partner with the CEO and the executive team to ensure effective decision-making, execution and communication strategies are deployed across the company.


  • Act as a swiss army knife, helping the CEO execute the company’s highest priorities on a given day or week while working on longer term special projects and strategic initiatives.
  • Serve as a thought partner to the CEO, standing in during meetings and speaking on their behalf when necessary.
  • Support the CEO in communicating overall business strategy and goals to each function, while helping set these goals at the beginning of every quarter.
  • Help the entire company work together more effectively through better process and documentation.
  • Use internal data and your own analytical prowess to guide metric tracking and goal setting.
  • Organize and coordinate cross-functional team projects, helping prioritize resources and bandwidth constantly.
  • Identify and resolve issues on behalf of the executive team, maintaining a pulse on each business unit and ensuring teams are constantly aligned on priorities.
  • Communicating with investors while helping to prepare board decks, investment decks, executive presentations and other high-value collateral.


  • 5+ years of exceptional operational experience in tech, consulting and/or finance.
  • Experience or exposure to organizational management best practices.
  • Ability to persuade high-level executives toward a plan of action using data-driven analyses with complex data sets.
  • A self-starter with knowledge of product organizations and people management.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills as well as presentation abilities.
  • Passion for leading teams toward effective and sustainable outcomes.
  • Track record of success in multiple professional environments with an emphasis on project management and results.
  • Action-oriented with unlimited amounts of hustle.
  • Asystematic, organized thinker with a strong yet flexible approach (“strong opinions held loosely”).
  • MBA preferred but not required.

Deno is founded by the same engineers who built Node.js, the JavaScript runtime used by millions of developers and used by nearly all websites in one form or another. Deno is a continuation of the ideas in Node; a modern take on server-side JavaScript development. The open source project has already secured itself among the ranks of the most popular projects on GitHub.

Our commercial product is cloud service for hosting JavaScript servers. It is one of just a handful of implementations of serverless at edge in existence. By repurposing web browser technology for server software, we aim to accelerate a new generation of extreme low-latency edge applications.

The Deno company grew out of our open source project during the pandemic. As result we're 100% remote with employees all over the world. Don't assume this means we're not a real company. Deno is backed by the most lauded and household-name investors in Silicon Valley (we can tell you more privately).

The entire process is fully remote and all communication will happen over email or via video chat. Once you've submitted your application, the team will review your submission, and may reach out for a short screening interview over video call. If you pass the screen you will be invited to up to four follow up interviews. The calls: usually take between 30-60 minutes each depending on the interviewer. Once the interviews are over, the team will meet to discuss several roles and candidates and may ask one or two follow-up questions over email or a quick call or go directly to making an offer.
